Description

1794 Large Cent, S-67, B-59, MS64+ Brown
Condition Census, Head of 1795

1794 1C Head of 1795, S-67, B-59, R.3, MS64+ Brown PCGS. Breen Die State III with clash marks and a faint crack through the tops or RTY. Another crack crosses the cheek, temple, and hair but there is no evidence of the late die state crack through 794. Although S-67 is considered reasonably plentiful with an R.3 rating, higher grade examples are elusive.

This piece represents the "Head of 1795" or "Gardner's First Head," the latter Breen's usage. He attributed the design to assistant Mint engraver John Smith Gardner. Sheldon's varieties 67 through 72 are considered Head of 1795 varieties. For Guide Book collectors, variety 67 is the most plentiful in high grades, although the Noyes Census lists only 20 examples in AU or better for the six Sheldon numbers, combined. On this well-preserved piece, recorded as sixth finest in the Noyes Census, both the chips out of the hair and the diagnostic die clashes before the profile are clearly visible. Del Bland grades this specimen AU50, and it appears with three others in a fifth-place tie in his Condition Census.

Lustrous surfaces are medium-brown with considerable violet overtones and the faintest hints of cinnamon-orange at the right obverse and reverse. A trivial obverse rim bruise at 9:30 confirms the provenance. Though a handful of tiny nicks and wispy flaws preclude a finer grade, this coin offers great all-around visual appeal. Our EAC grade AU50. PCGS Head of 1795 Population: 5 in 64 Brown (2 in 64+), 9 finer. 1794 S-67 Population: 1 in 64+ Brown, 0 finer (11/21).
