Description

Minas Gerais. João Prince Regent Counterstamped 960 Reis ND (1808) XF40 NGC, KM250, LMB-448 (RRR), Bentes-330.02. Crowned arms counterstamp on the obverse, banded globe on the reverse (XF Standard), struck on a Charles IV 8 Reales 1790 LM-IJ from Peru (cf. KM87). While Charles IV host coins are commonly found on these counterstamped issues, those with the Charles III/IV transitional bust are exceedingly scarce. While we have been unable to locate a single specimen sold in the last decade, Heritage did offer a slightly more common Potosi host coin with this bust type in the Paulistana Collection in 2010, which hammered for $6,000. The current example boasts uniformly pewter-gray appearances amidst gently circulated features. The bust and its features prominent, allowing for the easy identification of the transitional type, and very much a key of this popular counterstamped issue; sure to appeal to Brazilian numismatists and counterstamp collectors alike.
