Description

1823/2 N-1 Cent, AU55
Important Coronet Cent Variety

1823/2 1C N-1, R.2, AU55 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Great Pacific Collection. Both varieties of the 1823 large cents, the N-1 overdate and the N-2 normal date, are scarce in high grades with demand exceeding supply. The satin surfaces exhibit blue-steel and olive with faded mint red that is brighter on the reverse. A trace of rub on the high points prevents a Mint State determination. This example is tied with two others for seventh best in the Noyes census, a record that includes five proofs. Among non-proofs, it is tied for the second finest 1823/2 Overdate cent. Population: 5 in 55 (1 in 55+), 9 finer. CAC: 4 in 55, 1 finer (2/25).
Ex: Thomas D. Reynolds (2/2017); Great Pacific Collection (Goldberg Auctions, 2/2020), lot 221.
