1880 Shield Nickel, XF40
Only 16,000 Business Strikes Produced
1880 5C XF40 NGC. With 16,000 business strikes and 3,955
proofs produced, it is much easier for the date collector to locate
a proof than one of the rare business strikes of this date. The
1880 nickel is rare across the board with few pieces known in any
grade, but the higher-graded examples cost multiples of an XF such
as this one. So few 1880 nickels were struck it is believed that
the same dies were used on business strikes and proofs. This
pleasing, moderately circulated example was pulled out of
circulation after several years. The surfaces are light gray
overall with bright highlights over the devices. There are no
obvious or detracting marks on either side.(Registry values: N991)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 276E, PCGS# 3810, Greysheet# 2883)
