Description
1776 Pewter Continental Dollar, MS63
Newman 1-C, CURENCY
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter MS63 NGC.
Newman 1-C, Hodder 1-A.3, W-8445, R.3. Numismatic tradition
tells us that the Continental Currency pieces were one dollar
denomination coins, although some individuals have argued in favor
of a one cent denomination for the pewter pieces, calling the few
known silver pieces dollar coins. Those who argue in favor of the
one cent denomination suggest that pewter, being a nonprecious
metal, would have never been used for a coin of the one dollar
denomination. However, it is this cataloger's opinion that the size
alone warrants a one dollar specification for these pieces,
regardless of composition.Several varieties are known for the Continental Currency coins, including six die varieties and eight entries in the 2013 Guide Book, where these pieces are listed on page 85. Three of those varieties are relatively plentiful as two are called R.3, with about 300 pieces known of each, and the third is called R.4, with about 150 pieces known. The combined population includes a little under 800 pewter specimens, with fewer than 10 brass and silver examples known.
This Select Mint State specimen has an internal die break within the central ring, joining the tops of GI in FUGIO, a die state frequently seen on this variety. A fully lustrous light gray specimen, this pewter piece has reflective fields with a few trivial marks and splashes of tan patina. The new owner will welcome this beauty as an important collection addition. Census: 8 in 63, 2 finer (8/12).
