S-5, B-6, Large Letters Obverse
1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars, AU55 NGC. S-5, B-6, R.4. Our EAC
Grade XF45. Large LIBERTY / Compact Bow. The obverse has
LIBERTY in large letters, larger than found on any other Wreath
cent, making this an important subtype. The small or compact ribbon
bow on the reverse is found on S-5, S-6, S-7, and the unique
NC-5.Varieties of 1793 Wreath Cents
The most extensive cent coinage in 1793 consisted of the Wreath design. The production of 63,353 coins required 11 different die pairs and witnessed three different edge types.
The Large Letters obverse die of S-5 was the first variety, featuring a reverse with a small ribbon bow. That obverse was only used for one variety, but the reverse was also used for S-6, S-7, and NC-5. Rated low R.4, the S-5 cent, with a surviving population of nearly 200 coins in all grades, is a popular variety for its distinctive obverse.
The S-6 is known as the Sprung Die variety, with an obverse die bulge seen to some degree on all known specimens. That bulge must have appeared in the die-hardening process before any coins were struck, and worsened during use. Approximately 400 surviving specimens of this R.3 variety are available to collectors.
The rarest Sheldon-numbered variety, and the only one omitted from the present offering, is the S-7, considered Low R.6 with about 25 examples known. Die failure through the date is the easiest feature for attribution.
The Horizontal Stem obverse die appeared on S-8, S-9, and NC-4. The three reverse dies are distinctive, with a Triangular Bow on S-8, a variety that was actually struck after S-9. The Triangular Bow S-8 is considered Low R.3, with more than 400 survivors.
The S-9 die pair, the most plentiful Wreath cent variety at R.2, displays a kidney-shaped ribbon bow on the reverse. More than 1,000 examples survive, although like other Wreath cents, most survivors are in lower grades. Approximately one-third of all Wreath cents derive from this die pair.
A thick stem end appears on the obverse die of S-10, which is die-linked to two different non-collectible NC varieties. The obverse of S-10 was also used for NC-5, which has the Small Bow reverse; the reverse die of S-10 was also used for NC-4 with the Horizontal Stem obverse. The S-10 variety is very scarce at R.4, with about 150 survivors. NC-4 is extremely rare with just five known examples. NC-5 remains unique, the only known example in the American Numismatic Society collection.
Two different Strawberry Leaf varieties are identified, called NC-2 and NC-3. Just four known examples survive of both varieties combined.
The final die pairing of the Wreath series has three distinct edge types. The Vine and Bars Edge appeared on all earlier Wreath cents, and continued into the S-11 die pair, now called S-11a. Perhaps 100 examples are known. The S-11b Lettered Edge with two leaves appeared next, with a surviving population of about 150 coins. Last was the S-11c Lettered Edge with a single leaf, and that edge device carried through to the Liberty Cap cents. Perhaps 400 examples of S-11c survive.
The Loring 1793 S-5 Cent
Breen Die State I; the tiny bulge at IT and die splinter below EN are both visible, but there is no evidence of a die bulge between the F in OF and the first A in AMERICA. This is a visually stunning coin whose interior parts on each side are light blue, while the fields and outer reaches have lovely olive-rose patina. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous with reflective fields and only scattered handling marks expected for the grade. Both sides are well-struck with only slight weakness on the highest design points, due in part to a trace of wear. A minor surface anomaly appears at the lower left obverse border.
