1776 Continental Dollar, Unc Details
Pewter, CURENCY, Newman 1-C

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter, N. 1-C, W-8445, R.3 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Celebrated numismatist Eric P. Newman believed that the Continental dollars were pattern dollars for the Continental Congress, to replace the Continental currency then in circulation. More recently, Erik Goldstein and David McCarthy proposed that the Continental dollars were commemorative medals issued in Europe after the end of the Revolutionary War. The popularity of the series is unabated. Newman 1-C is an early variety that spells CURRENCY with one letter R instead of two. This is a high-grade silver-gray example with attractive surfaces save for marks on the ON and EN in CONTINENTAL, and a moved upper crossbar on the R in CURENCY. Our consignor offers this 1776-dated piece in celebration of the United States' upcoming 250th anniversary. Listed on page 23 of the 2026 Guide Book.
