Description

1793 Chain Cent, VF25
AMERICA, Scarce Sheldon-2

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-2, B-2, High R.4, VF25 PCGS. Sheldon-2 is the rarest collectible Chain cent variety. Only NC-1 is rarer. The S-2 die pairing shares the obverse die with S-1, the famous AMERI. cent. Sheldon-2 is attributed by its wide date and a fully spelled AMERICA. This example displays bold legends, with slight weakness at 1 in the date, which is otherwise easily readable. The chain is bold and the bust is well outlined. Liberty's eye and mouth are clear, and many hair locks are distinct. A few rim dings exist, the most noticeable one above E and D of UNITED, but surface marks are otherwise tiny and inconsequential for the assigned VF25 grade. Medium chocolate-brown color includes reddish-brown accents on the reverse. The 1793 Chain cent is so historically important as the first circulating cent from the United States Mint that Jeff Garrett included the issue in his outstanding book 100 Greatest United States Coins.
