Description

1865 Nickel Three Cent, PR67 Cameo
Conditionally Rare Debut Proof

1865 3CN PR67 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The year 1865 kicked off the three cent nickel series with what would be by far the highest circulation strike coinage of its entire duration and what is estimated to be the lowest proof coinage. The Guide Book proof mintage of 500 pieces reflects those coins distributed through silver proof sets but neglects the unrecorded distribution of minor proof sets and individual specimens. However, the scarcity of surviving proofs in high grade supports the probability that the 1865 was, indeed, produced to a limited extent.

This Superb Gem Cameo is among the finest seen by either PCGS or NGC. The strike is tack-sharp, and the champagne-toned surfaces are seemingly pristine. Ample reflectivity in the fields further heightens the eye appeal. The date numerals show the typical recutting of the proof dies. Population: 3 in 67 (1 in 67+) Cameo, 0 finer (10/15).(Registry values: N7079)
