Description

1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS61
Satiny and Appealing for the Grade

1916 25C MS61 NGC. The satiny, brilliant surfaces of this Uncirculated 1916 Standing Liberty quarter display relatively few abrasions for the grade, and neither side has mentionable toning. The luster and look of this coin are typical of many Uncirculated 1916 quarters, although the strike is slightly softer than usual, particularly on Liberty's head, the eagle's wing edge and breast, and the date numerals, which are flat but clear. The 1916 quarter is difficult to grade in circulated condition because of its poorly detailed obverse. But in Mint State, one can better study the strike characteristics of the first-year issue. Only 52,000 pieces were struck of this date, utilizing dies with a design that had not yet been fully refined by the Mint. Thus, the 1916 design differs in many minute respects from the more widely distributed 1917 Type One issue.(Registry values: N2998)
