Description

1897-O Silver Dollar, MS65
A Formidable Condition Rarity

1897-O $1 MS65 NGC. The 1897-O Morgan dollar claims an adequate mintage of just over 4 million pieces, but the issue is extremely difficult to locate in high grade. Attractive, fully struck examples of this issue are seen so infrequently that, when found, they are immediately recognized to be among the rarest of all Morgan dollars and are priced accordingly. Fewer than two dozen coins have been certified in Gem or finer condition by PCGS and NGC combined and of these, perhaps only a small handful combine the elements of strike, surface, and eye appeal to the extent of this outstanding coin.

This New Orleans dollar is entirely exceptional for the issue. While most are weakly struck, this Gem is well-produced down to the tiniest details. When others are dull or average-looking, this radiant coin is amazingly lustrous and appealing. Where some are bagmarked or abraded, this coin features smooth brilliant surfaces on both sides. To be accurate, a few tiny abrasions and luster grazes touch Liberty's chin and cheek, but they are hardly visible when viewed in-hand. Certainly this is a coin for Registry Set consideration or for any advanced Morgan dollar collection. Census: 6 in 65, 2 finer (4/24).(Registry values: P7, N7079)
