Description

1884-S Silver Dollar, MS61
Well-Known Conditional Rarity

1884-S $1 MS61 PCGS. Brilliant and lustrous with a well-preserved reverse. The obverse shows fewer marks than anticipated for the MS61 level. Although the 1878-S through 1882-S are common in better Mint State grades, it is a different story for the 1884-S, despite a mintage of 3.2 million pieces. The issue is available in lightly circulated grades, but Uncirculated examples are undeniably scarce. One theory is that sealed Treasury bags containing '84-S dollars were shipped to Nevada casinos during the mid-20th century, leaving none for numismatists to open a decade or two later.(Registry values: P9, N2998)
