Description

1875 Twenty Cent, MS66
Just Nine Certified Finer

1875 20C MS66 PCGS. BF-1. The obverse contains electric-blue, fire-orange, and purple hues, where the reverse intersperses medium-blue, sunrise-yellow, and burnt-orange. Abrasions are non-existent, as the grade suggests, and no significant areas of weakness are present.

There are three die marriages of this date. The BF-1 has a right-aligned obverse die, where the two latter die marriages have their dates oriented further left. The BF-1 reverse die has a die line between the eagle's legs and another under the right wing, and this reverse is shared with the recently discovered and extremely rare BF-3.

The Philadelphia issues of 1875 are quite scarce, and, according to Brunner and Frost, underrated due to its mint of origin and the perception that Philadelphia issues are more common than branch mint issues. This desirability is no more apparent than for this example, which exists near the pinnacle of the grade distribution. PCGS and NGC have assigned the MS66 grade only eight and seven times respectively, with the only higher certifications being one 66+ and three 67s from PCGS and four 67s and one 67★ from NGC (7/25). Given the scarcity of this issue and desirability of this Premium Gem, specialists in the series should take this opportunity very seriously.(Registry values: N4719)
