Description
1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
MS64 Full Head
CAC Approved and Sharply Struck
1916 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. CAC. Due to the famously
"mushy" engraving of the obverse design, the 1916 Standing Liberty
quarter can be difficult to identify as well struck or not. The
Full Head designation, while often an indicator of sharpness on
1917 Type One pieces, means something slightly different for the
1916. On this first-year issue, Liberty's hair detail is defined by
a series of shallow curls along the ear line rather than the
rounded and elevated curls on the 1917. The current coin displays
this area to its fullest sharpness. However, many coins that
qualify for the Full Head designation are not as sharp as others in
the other design high points. For example, many Full Head 1916s
will be weak along the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing)
wing, or will have poorly formed rims. The present coin illustrates
what the sharpness should be for a coin to be considered a full
strike: the rims are broad and squared, Liberty's head is complete,
and the leading edge of the wing is bold as well. The date is also
sharply defined. Weakness on the stars, shield rivets, and gown
folds exists on all 1916s and is not a characteristic of the strike
either way. While many 1916 quarters survive in Choice Full Head condition, eye appeal varies within the grade. This piece displays lovely mint luster and warm golden toning, with only a few small marks that prevent Gem classification. The CAC green label is well deserved. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. CAC: 25 in 64, 28 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N4719)
