Description

1879-CC VAM-3 'Capped Die' Dollar, MS64
Colorfully Toned, Few Are Finer

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS64 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. Attractive, multihued toning gleams over partially reflective fields of this near-Gem 1879-CC. The popular "Capped Die" feature is now recognized as a Large CC mintmark over a Small CC, despite a Carson City Mint engraver's attempt to disguise the anomaly. This is a sharply struck example with vibrant shades of blue, violet, and gold throughout both sides, and only a few minor marks are well-hidden within the toning. Finer Capped Die examples are scarce, with just 14 pieces finer at PCGS (2/18).
