Description

1846 Liberty Seated Quarter, PR64
13 Examples Traced

1846 25C PR64 PCGS. Briggs 4-F. No mintage figures were recorded for the 1846 proof Seated Liberty quarter, but the production total was undoubtedly small. Seated quarter specialist Larry Briggs estimates 10-12 specimens are extant, while PCGS CoinFacts estimates an even smaller surviving population, at 8-10 examples in all grades. Heritage catalogers have traced 13 pieces that we believe are different examples, including one in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

This Choice proof specimen is sharply struck with all detail brought up to the finest advantage. On this example, even tan-lilac toning bathes both sides with intense electric-blue and lavender undertones visible at certain angles. The fields are bright and form a perfect backdrop for the sharply defined devices. A few small, unobtrusive marks are noted in the fields. One particular mark deserves mention, being a lint mark extending down from the right arm of the second T in STATES. This is an excellent pedigree marker for numismatic scholars. A simply gorgeous and elusive coin. PCGS Population: 7 in 64, 3 finer (6/25).
