Description

Carolingian. Louis the Pious (814-840) Denier ND (818-822/3) MS65 NGC, Venice mint, Class 2, Rob-1158, MEC I-789, MG-456, Dep-1116D. +HLVDOVVICVS IMP (MP ligate), cross pattee / +VEN | ECIAS in two lines. An exceptionally fine example of this iconic issue, and among the most desirable and aesthetically pleasing of Louis's coinage, after his portrait pieces. While it is notorious difficult to find Louis's early coins in Mint State, the emissions of Venice tend to survive much more nicely, this specimen in full bloom with rainbow tones and thick die polish lines.
