Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Strongly Contrasted

1885 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.4. Two die pairs were used to produce the 1,105 proofs for 1885. This first pairing is most easily distinguished by the "Longacre doubling" seen on all the peripheral lettering. Proofs were struck in each quarter, but the majority, 640 pieces, were struck in the last quarter. There was apparently a demand from jewelers for proof gold dollars, an assertion first made by Breen, then repeated by John Dannreuther. This is a deeply reflective example whose surfaces display significant field-device contrast. Additionally, there is noticeable reddish patina around the periphery on the obverse. Fully struck, of course. Census: 14 in 65 Cameo (1 in 65 ), 24 finer (8/23).(Registry values: P1)
