1834 HM-1 Quarter Eagle, MS64
Small Head Obverse

1834 $2 1/2 Small Head, HM-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Two types of 1834 quarter eagles are known as the Small Head and the Large Head, sometimes called the "Booby Head," a name that was adopted from the 1839 large cents and apparently first used by John H. Clapp. Mint records suggest a production of 112,334 Classic Head quarter eagles in 1834, with production beginning in early September. Mint Director Samuel Moore sent two examples of the new coinage to Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury on September 3, 1834. Those two coins were likely examples of this Small Head type that are identified as the first issues in the emission sequence for these coins. For today's collectors of first-year coinage, the HM-1 coins are the logical choice. This impressive Choice Mint State piece has rich yellow luster with minimal marks on the lustrous devices or the reflective, semiprooflike fields. Population: 39 in 64 (2 in 64+), 6 finer. CAC: 12 in 64, 7 finer (7/23).
