Description

Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1801 NR-JJ MS63+ NGC, Nuevo Reino mint, KM62.1, Cal-1738, Onza-1136, Restrepo-97.25. Genuinely outstanding quality for any colonial 8 Escudos of Colombia, this piece ranking not only among the finest certified for this particular date (just one MS64 has been seen across NGC and PCGS combined), but also within the upper bracket of the whole series, NGC witnessing only 35 coins above this grade level. Besting the Eldorado specimen by five and "a half" points, while this date is not exceptionally scarce on the whole, it was notably missing from both Eliasberg and Caballero de las Yndias. Visually, the surfaces contain an almost matte appearance, a silky luster traversing the fields unimpeded, with perhaps the coin's only imperfection being a small mark at the level of Charles' chin.
