Rare CAR CR-E 8 Reales

Central American Republic 8 Reales 1831 CR-E MS62 NGC, San Jose mint, KM22, Elizondo-1. The single-greatest obstacle to completing the Central American Republic 8 Reales series, this already scarce type appears here with the rarer of the two assayer marks. To further fuel the fire, this is no ordinary example, but survives as one of only two known Mint State pieces at NGC. Admitting a touch of strike weakness to the iconic Ceiba tree as well as some pre-strike planchet chatter on the reverse that partially obscures the denomination, the remaining details appear rather Mint Fresh and wholly boosted by the watery luster that pervades throughout. The outstanding pedigree speaks to the coin's desirability.

Ex. Q. David Bowers Collection (Stack's Bowers, January 2011, Lot 1497); The Frederick R. Mayer Collection of Costa Rica (Spink-Smythe, October 2008, Lot 1011); Freeman Craig Collection; O.B. Windau Collection (supplier of coins to Clyde Hubbard and Amon G. Carter)
