Description

Bavaria. Maximilian I Joseph Taler 1811 MS66 NGC, Munich mint, KM701, Dav-551, AKS-48, Thun-43, Wittelsbach-2592. Mintage: 10,892. "Peak" in every sense of the word, and a truly astonishing selection to represent the date within the NGC census. Slightly topaz to the obverse while the reverse shows a general paucity of notable tone, it is difficult not to be transfixed by the eye appeal on offer here, not least given that we have been able to find just one other in superior condition from the early 19th-century, pre-Ludwig Bavarian series (an 1819 Taler also in this sale). Unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon, making for an ideal target for the connoisseur.
