Description

Delightful and Very Rare Gem '99' Pond 1898

Republic gold "99" Pond 1898 MS65 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM10.2, Hern-Z52. The '99' overstamped Ponde stand as substantial rarities in the broader South African collection. During the course of the Boer War, British forces intercepted the dies for the 1899 South African Ponde in Lourenzo Marques, currently known as Maputo in modern-day Mozambique. Unfazed by this challenge, it was determined to superimpose a '99' overstamp beneath Kruger's bust on the existing 1898 Ponde. An extremely limited series of merely 130 overstamps was produced, making these pieces exceedingly rare in the present day. The present offering is a conditionally superior Gem Mint State example emboldened by fresh mint luster, with well-defined raised features and only very limited grade-defining wisps to the fields. Currently bested by just one piece across both grading services, we expect to see rapidly escalating bids from discerning specialists when this crosses the block.
