Description

Exceedingly Rare Honduran 20 Pesos

Republic gold 20 Pesos 1908/897 MS61 NGC, Tegucigalpa mint, KM57, Fr-4. A historic rarity of Honduran numismatics, part of a 3-year series (though spanning a twenty year period) that is famously important as the top denomination of the first gold coins struck in Honduras. This marks the first occasion that Heritage will have to bring any of the three dates in the series to auction, a clear sign of immense rarity given the bounty of world class coins that have crossed our auction block. The last auction appearance of this date we could find was an Ex. Mortimer Hammel piece sold through Baldwin's in 2014, that coin was ex-mount and with gilded surfaces and still hammered for over $55,000 USD more than a decade ago. This selection has been rewarded with a Mint State designation by NGC, featuring a tinge of rose toning and scattered evidence of handling that cap the grade. The sole occupant of the date on NGC's census records and tied with a single MS61 dated 1888 for the "Top Pop" of the entire series. A dream coin of Central American numismatics worthy of the finest of collections.
