1915 Quarter Eagle, PR66
Sharply Struck High-End Rarity
1915 $2 1/2 JD-1, Low R.5, PR66 NGC. Although matte proof
coinage of cents and nickels continued into 1916, the last year for
proof gold with the sandblast finish was 1915. Proof quarter eagles
of this date are scarce in all grades, and rare in the upper
levels. Only 100 pieces were struck, all on November 5th, and just
70 to 80 pieces are known today in all grades.The proof quarter eagles of Pratt's Indian and eagle design are in high demand today, but at their time of issue they found limited audience mainly in the die-hard proof gold collectors who ordered sets every year regardless any influencing factors. The circulation strike issues of this denomination served little commercial purpose but were popular to be given as Christmas gifts, so proof quarter eagles had no appeal outside of strictly numismatic circles.
This Premium Gem proof displays a sharp strike and luminous peach-gold hues across untouched surfaces. Outstanding eye appeal supports the grade. Census: 11 in 66, 9 finer (7/25).
