Description

Majestic Gold Ducaton D'Or of Charles II

Brabant. Charles II gold Ducaton d'Or (8 Souverains) 1698 AU Details (Mount Removed) PCGS, Antwerp mint, KM117.2, Fr-115, Vanhoudt-703, Delm-190. Hand mintmark. A magnificent gold type from the reign of Charles II, likely struck for presentation purposes in incredibly limited figures. Though mintages for these immense golden emissions from Antwerp are known for other years of Charles' reign, no mentions of 1698-dated examples are in the records, and only a few examples are known to exist today. This particular representative shows evidence of past mounting, a fate not uncommon to special presentation pieces that were worn as pendants and displayed proudly. Though this piece has been cleaned, partial mint gloss and luster still abides to the surfaces in pockets. However, the damage is rather unobtrusive, allowing the incredible regal detail of this production to display as majestically as intended.
