Description

1797 B-1, BB-73 Silver Dollar, AU58
9x7 Stars, Large Letters
Bowers' Late State Plate Coin

1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Large Letters, B-1, BB-73, R.3, AU58 PCGS. Bowers Die State VI and plated on page 136 of the Bowers' Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars 1794-1804 as the "Late die state with advanced die cracks and heavy clash marks." Both dies exhibit multiple die cracks with heavy obverse clash marks. This example is the latest die state we have seen and Bowers cites this exact coin for his final die state. Not only is this example remarkable for its advanced die state, but it is also a gorgeous near-Mint example with minor traces of circulation wear on the highpoints. The surfaces retain nearly full luster with light golden toning. Trivial spots below the first 7 in the date and at the base of the B in LIBERTY confirm the impressive provenance of this scarce Small Eagle dollar. PCGS Population (for the BB-73 variety): 2 in 58, 2 finer (5/25).
From The Eric Lane Collection of Early US Dollars.
