1796 Dime, JR-4, MS65
Outstanding Prooflike Surfaces
Condition Census, Ex: Eliasberg
1796 10C JR-4, R.4, MS65 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg, where this coin
was described as "fully prooflike and possibly a presentation
piece." The prooflike surfaces remain, with frosted devices set
against mirrored fields, and translucent golden toning at the
margins. If not a special strike, the coin is undoubtedly produced
from fresh dies with extra care. The portrait of Liberty and the
Small Eagle are fully detailed even on the extreme central high
points. In fact, this coin has one of the sharpest renditions of
the Small Eagle and its supporting legs, talons, clouds, and
surrounding wreath we have seen. The peripheries are not as boldly
rendered. Struck on an overweight planchet, light adjustment marks
are visible with a glass on the reverse margin at AMERICA. Slight
peripheral weakness is seen here, as well as on the opposing
obverse border where minor misalignment of the dies results in
slight weakness at the dentils and on stars 9 through 13.Other memorable JR-4 dimes include the former Garrett coin, sold by Bowers and Ruddy Galleries in 1980 -- a toned coin, also of Gem quality. Both the current coin and the Garrett specimen show the 6 in the date with bold recutting, the secondary 6 positioned well below the primary digit with the curl and ball of the underdigit lightly effaced. This feature is not mentioned in Early United States Dimes 1796 - 1837 and may be visible only on the high-grade examples of the variety.
The Seated dime reference further suggests that only 10% of all 1796 dimes are the JR-4 variety. If so, the current population reports combining all varieties need to be viewed with that estimate in mind, suggesting this outstanding dime is one of two pieces at the top end of the Condition Census for the JR-4 variety. A remarkable coin with a touch of cameo contrast on each side. Census (all varieties included): 9 in 65, 10 finer (12/15).
