Description

1828 Dime, PR63
JR-1, Small Date
Very Rare in Proof Format

1828 10C Small Date PR63 NGC. JR-1, High R.7 as Proof. A sharply struck specimen with flashy fields and squared-off dentils. Attractively toned sea-green, ruby-red, and golden-brown. The fields are lightly clashed but lack any consequential marks. In the decades prior to the advent of third party certification, unworn early dimes with field reflectivity were frequently cataloged as proof, when they were instead well-made Uncirculated examples. True proof 1828 dimes are extremely rare. The Dime Book (1984) states "at least five proofs reported." NGC and PCGS combined have certified four examples with possible duplication of submissions over the years. We know of only the following modern auction appearances:

1. NGC PR65. (J.C. Morgenthau, 1/1943), lot 422; Floyd T. Starr Collection (Stack's, 10/1992), lot 355; Turtle Rock Collection (Superior, 2/2008), lot 492, which realized $29,900.

2. Gem Proof. 60th Anniversary Sale (Stack's, 10/1995), lot 321, which realized $22,000.

3. PR64. E.W. Ropes Collection (New York Coin & Stamp Co., 2/1899); J.M. Clapp; Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 1081, which realized $8,800.
