Description

1908-D Five Dollar, MS65
Rarely Offered This Fine

1908-D $5 MS65 PCGS. The first coinage of Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head half eagle was accomplished at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, while New Orleans did not strike the design until 1909. The 1908-D boasts a limited mintage of 148,000 pieces and is far scarcer than the Philadelphia coin in high grade. This is a rare Gem-graded example. PCGS and NGC combined have seen only 22 submissions in MS65, and just one coin numerically finer (6/25). We have previously handled only nine MS65 examples of this issue, which appeared in our auctions between 2006 and 2025. This piece represents a rare opportunity for the advanced collector seeking a 1908-D in this grade.

A bold strike encompasses the devices, leaving the fields with luminous straw-gold mint luster that has the typical satiny appearance for which the 1908-D is known. The fields and high points of the devices show minute marks that prevent a finer grade. Population: 15 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N7079)
