1895 Morgan Dollar, PR65
Important Proof-Only Issue
Original and Deeply Toned

1895 $1 PR65 PCGS. VAM-3. The long-standing rumor of 12,000 circulation strikes produced for the 1895 Philadelphia Morgan (and supported by certain Mint documents) remains unproven. Various theories attempt to account for this discrepancy: an erroneous entry, an attempt to balance the Mint's books, or the issue perished in full during the meltings under the Pittman Act more than two decades later. The quandary has elevated the 1895 proof Morgan to near-legendary status.

Just 880 proofs were struck, a fairly standard mintage for the denomination in 1895. However, as no circulation strikes have surfaced, Morgan enthusiasts must choose to acquire an 1895 proof for their collection or forego the year altogether. The choice is commonly determined by the allotted budget, as the overwhelming demand for proof examples has left many high-end pieces fiscally unattainable.

This Gem proof is certain to attract its share of bidders given its obviously original surfaces and bold proof strike. Intensely deep olive-gray toning is layered in radiant, luminous luster, with each side highlighted by a small sphere of brilliance. The obverse toning slightly reduces field reflectivity, as the reverse shows outstanding mirrored fields with stark contrast. Undertones of iridescent sea-blue, lavender and caramel flash during rotation, with no significant marks or abrasions hidden beneath the pleasing, natural patina.

Four proof obverse dies are known in keeping with the Mint's procedure of striking a few hundred proofs at a time in the 1890s. The present example is VAM-3, with a far date and a doubled 1 and 5, as well as a slightly doubled profile. PCGS reports only 21 numerically finer pieces in non-Cameo (11/25).(Registry values: N7079)
