Description

1865 Eagle, AU53
Rare Low-Mintage Issue

1865 $10 AU53 NGC. In the Civil War year of 1865, gold coins did not circulate except in the far West, and unbacked paper money replaced Liberty eagles elsewhere in the country. The 1865 ten dollar business mintage was just 3,980 pieces, less than 4% of the 1861 production. PCGS estimates only 50 to 75 survivors, predominantly in XF to AU grades. The present coin displays ample glimpses of orange-red luster, along with the expected number of small to moderate marks. 1865 was the final year of the No Motto series at Philadelphia, though the San Francisco Mint would strike No Motto tens into 1866. Census: 8 in 53, 15 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N4719)
