Description

1846-O Seated Liberty Dollar, MS63
Branch Mint Condition Rarity
Ex: Eliasberg

1846-O $1 OC-1, R.2, MS63 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/b. The Eliasberg cataloger was clearly captivated by this coin, writing "One of the finest Liberty Seated silver dollars we have ever seen of any date or variety, a showpiece." The coin's status as the first branch mint silver dollar and the only branch mint issue from the 1840s makes this date a popular one with collectors throughout the years. This is an early die state example, showing a faint die crack above ICA of AMERICA but none of the additional die cracks that form in later die stages. In its latest die state, the reverse is rotated 45°. While the strike is generally sharp, some weakness exists at Liberty's head and the adjacent stars, as well as along the highest edge of the eagle's right (facing) wing. Deeply reflective fields display splashes of blue at the rims complemented by amber-gold and champagne hues. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 8 in 63 (1 in 63+), 4 finer (4/25).
