Description
1808 Capped Bust Half Dollar, MS65+
O-109a, Advanced Die State
1808 50C O-109a, R.3, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. A remarkably
attractive and lustrous representative of the John Reich Capped
Bust design, a conditionally rare example of the two-year type. The
design was restyled in 1809 with a similar but somewhat more-sedate
portrait and eagle, a curious action by the Mint in the eyes of
many Bust half collectors. The high-end Gem surfaces display the intended design to its full advantage, with a needle-sharp strike and a trace of rainbow iridescence at the margins. Lovely golden-ivory toning deepens to deeper blue, russet, and bronzelike shades that glow with satiny luster. The O-109a variety shows extensive die cracks on both the obverse and reverse, none of which impair the strike, but each crack conveys considerable interest to the die state specialist. The eye appeal and technical quality are outstanding. Steve Herrman ranks the present coin fourth in his Condition Census for the variety according to his Autumn, 2015 listing.
