1870-CC Seated Liberty Dollar, MS63
Only One Finer Example at PCGS

1870-CC $1 OC-8, High R.4, MS63 PCGS. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. Seateddollarvarieties.com identifies nine die marriages employed for a 12,462-piece mintage utilizing four obverse dies and six reverse dies. The coins were struck in small numbers accounting for 11 documented Mint deliveries, ranging from 2,303 pieces on the high side to as few as 500 pieces on other occasions. The multiple small mintages explains the numerous varieties for this first-year Carson City silver dollar. While the 1870-CC is the most available of the early CC Seated dollar dates, the issue remains extremely popular with collectors and is rare in Select Mint State or finer grades. Viewed head-on, this MS63 example displays cloud-gray patina spreading evenly throughout both sides. Angled in light, underlying prooflikeness reveals iridescent colors including gold, violet, blue, sunrise-orange hues. The sharp strike shows only nominal weakness at Liberty's upper hair strands. Smooth surfaces harbor a few pinprick ticks in the right obverse field, but there are no significant marks or abrasions to disturb the excellent eye appeal. PCGS Population: 8 in 63, 1 finer (7/25).
