Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Pronounced Contrast

1885 G$1 PR64 Cameo NGC. CAC. In his recently published United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, John W. Dannreuther lists two varieties for the 1885 gold dollar (1,105 proofs minted). Both share a common reverse, while the obverses are differentiated by the presence or absence of a die lump on Liberty's forehead. No such lump is present on this example, corresponding to the JD-2 variety. All 1885 gold dollar proofs are scarce, with only 200 to 300 coins known, about evenly split between the two variants. Deep orange-gold surfaces feature profound field reflectivity and frosty devices. There are a couple of contact marks on the obverse but few on the reverse. A lovely 19th century proof gold coin.(Registry values: P1)
