Description

Kings of Wessex. Ecgberht (802-839) Penny ND (825-c. 828) AU Details (Damaged) NGC, Canterbury mint, Diormod as moneyer, First Coinage, Early Portrait type, S-1033, N-562 (ER), BMC (Anglo-Saxon II)-Unl., SCBI II (Hunterian)-529 = EMC-1002.0529, SCBI XLII (Southeastern)-724A, SCBI LXVII (British Museum)-Unl., Naismith-C70.1b (same dies), Blunt, "The Coinage of Ecgbeorht, King of Wessex, 802-39" (British Numismatic Journal Vol. 28, no. 35 1955), 3 (same). +HECEBEΛRHT REX, diademed, "Baldred"-style bust of Ecgberht right / +DIORmOD mHET (HE ligate, uncial M's), cross crosslet. Among the rarest types of Ecgberht, and certainly the most challenging of his portrait issues, with both Blunt and Naismith recording only 3 known examples, none of which are this coin; reportedly, the last specimen to come to auction was part of the Lockett Collection (lot 455) in 1955. Despite a minor graze over the obverse, likely from a shovel, the offering in general remains well-struck and defined, particularly on the reverse. Quite simply a singular opportunity sure to excite among collectors of the series.
