Description

1855-O Gold Dollar, AU58
Last-Year New Orleans Issue

1855-O G$1 AU58 NGC. Winter-2. The modifications introduced on the Type Two gold dollar proved challenging for all of the branch mints, so much so that all four only produced one issue of the new design. In 1855 the New Orleans Mint struck 55,000 Type Two pieces, ending the run of gold dollars from the southern mint. A refreshingly original palette is displayed on this near-Mint example, with deep green-gold surfaces covered in decades of lilac, orange and lemon charm. The strike is above-average for the issue, showing good details, minimal die clashing and no mentionable planchet flaws. A thin mark running down Liberty's jawline serves as a pedigree marker. Typical of the issue, luster is marginally subdued, although some softly frosted recesses and protected areas are noted.(Registry values: N1793)
