1882 Three Dollar Gold, PR67 Cameo
The Sole Finest Proof Certified
Remarkable Condition and Appeal

1882 $3 PR67 Cameo NGC. The mintage of proof three dollar gold pieces in 1882 was about midway between the ultra-low productions of just a few years before and the low three-figure mintages of later years. Only 76 pieces were struck, and 50 to 60 pieces are thought to survive. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population totals 79 coins, which is obvious inflated by resubmissions. This Superb Gem is the sole finest Cameo example certified, and it is a numeric grade above the finest non-Cameo and Ultra/Deep Cameo pieces known (9/18). We have never before offered an 1882 proof in this grade. In fact, we have previously handled only one PR66 coin, a non-Cameo in the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2001), lot 8166, which garnered a then-impressive $20,700. Recently, a PR64+ Cameo PCGS CAC coin in the Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2018), realized more than $22,800. This piece is nearly three full grade points finer than that coin, and its eye appeal is comparably superior.

Close examination of the glimmering fields and sharp, frosty devices finds them virtually flawless. You can count on one hand the number of faint field lines that might prevent a finer grade, although they are just as easily die polish lines as they are hairlines. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold and contrast is stark on both sides. Eye appeal is off the charts.(Registry values: N10218)
