Description

1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS64
Vibrant High-End Discovery

1889-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. VAM-5. Ex: Desert Find. When looking for a Carson City Morgan in near-Gem condition, this coin embodies what one wants to see. Thoroughly frosted, brilliant luster rolls freely through vibrant fields and over sharply struck devices. Every detail, from Liberty's hair curls the eagle's talons and breast feathers, is well brought up and enlivened with radiant luster. Grade-limiting abrasions are minute. On the obverse, only some faint grazes on the cheek and in the left field are noteworthy, and on the reverse, only a mark in the field right of the eagle and a graze above GOD WE are mentionable. The surfaces are otherwise free of anything that would deny a Gem designation, and, the coin is yet to be reviewed by CAC.

This piece is from the VAM-5 dies, and it is in the familiar middle state where the crack extends from the star through ONE on the reverse but does not continue to DOLLAR. The crack through the date is also present.

The 1889-CC Morgan boasts a scant survivorship in the lofty MS64 grade level, and there are barely a handful of non-Prooflike pieces finer. This issue's mintage of 350,000 coins was not horrendously low for the Carson City Mint, and they were all struck during the last quarter of the calendar year. However, most did not receive numismatic attention, and Uncirculated pieces known today are survivors by chance more than anything else. Even the famous GSA hoard distributed in the 1970s yielded only a single 1889-CC Morgan dollar. The vast majority of the Desert Find dollars are in superior condition to that lone GSA coin, which was an MS62 Deep Prooflike, per NGC. The Desert Find has done what the GSA hoard failed to do: reveal a small group of high-end 1889-CC dollars previously unknown to the numismatic world. Population: 38 in 64 (2 in 64+), 3 finer (7/25).(Registry values: P9, N7079)
