Description

Possibly the Finest Known 18th Century Malta 2 Scudi

Francisco Ximenez de Texada 2 Scudi 1774 MS65+ NGC, KM287, Dav-1605. J774 variety. Attractive toning with ample underlying luster. Amazingly well-preserved. The coinage of Malta is not particularly rare, and we note a dozen or so examples of this date having been auctioned off over the last decade. However, what makes this coin so covetable is its condition. The vast majority, if not all, of the others that have sold have been solidly in the VF range. The present specimen, on the other hand, has somehow escaped the same sort of circulation that its peers experienced. We would not be surprised if this turned out to be the finest known of all 18th century Malta 2 scudi. For the collector world crowns, this would seem to be an important opportunity, as the likes of this coin may not appear on the market again for quite some time.
