Description

1858 Seated Dollar, Original PR64
Series Key, Proof-Only Issue

1858 $1 PR64 CACG. OC-P1, Low R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. As a proof-only issue, the 1858 Seated dollar is one of the most-sought dates in the Seated dollar series. The seateddollarvarieties.com website estimates 275 original proofs and 35 restrike proofs were struck. The original proofs and the restrikes share the same obverse die, with the original proofs having the reverse used to strike 1856 and 1857 original proofs as well as the 1859 regular issue proofs. Diagnostic die lumps exist on the L of DOL. and the first S of STATES. This reverse was later used for restrike proofs dated 1851, 1852, and 1854. A few 1858 restrike proofs exist employing an 1859 reverse die -- the Osburn-Cushing website estimates five restrike proofs from the OC-P2 die pair survive. The overwhelming majority of 1858 proofs are from the original proof dies, although it is possible some OC-P1 proofs could have been struck at a later date. The unfinished are beneath Liberty's chin is key to determining when the proofs were struck. This OC-P1 example has a wide unfinished area beneath the chin confirming its status as an original proof. Boldly reflective fields surround lightly frosted central motifs on this near-Gem proof. Sharply struck as expected, the coin is richly toned in blue and gray shades, with ivory-gold obverse accents and additional amber-gold and reddish hues on the reverse. This attractive Choice proof example is housed in a new CACG holder.(Registry values: N4719)
