Description

1855 Gold Dollar, Frosty MS65
Beautifully Colored Type Coin

1855 G$1 MS65 NGC. Of the two available Type Two gold dollar issues (the 1854 and '55), the 1855 is the slightly scarcer coin in Gem condition. Both dates are highly sought-after by type and date collectors, but few Gems are extant to go around. As a result, the certified population of the 1855 gold dollar suggests the issue should be readily available in Choice grade and only marginally scarce in Gem, yet, the date is elusive in MS64 and MS65 coins are rarely seen due to so many being tightly held by collectors. Moreover, the certified population charts reflect multiple resubmissions. We have previously offered a Gem 1855 gold dollar only 11 times in the past two-plus decades, and such a coin never fails to excite bidders.

This glowing, frosty example is especially impressive due to its swirling hues of orange, rose, peach, and lilac-gold. The surfaces are free of even trivial abrasions, and the only mentionable striking weakness is seen on the first L in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date. Lightly clashed on both sides, as usual. This piece is a visual treat and an important acquisition for the type collector. Census: 31 in 65, 14 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N7079)
