Description

1865 Ten Dollar, AU53
Only 3,980 Pieces Struck

1865 $10 AU53 PCGS. An estimated 50-60 examples of this date are known and the 1865 is among the scarcer No Motto eagles from Philadelphia. A total of 23 coins have been certified in the About Uncirculated grade range by PCGS, but this number seems to be significantly inflated by resubmissions. It is likely that no more than a dozen or so pieces are known. There is a single Uncirculated 1865 eagle, a PCGS-graded MS63 that has never been sold at public auction.

Since the start of 2003, there have been five auction prices realized for this issue in PCGS-certified AU53. Three different pieces were offered between September 2013 and October 2014, and they realized: $15,980 (9/2013), $18,800 (1/2014), and $15,275 (10/2014). This is a solid example for the grade and it is likely within the lower end of the Condition Census. The yellow and rose-gold surfaces show only minor abrasions and chatter in the fields, with light wear on the devices and traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas.
Ex: Philadelphia Auction (Stack's Bowers, 9/2013), lot 3450, where it brought $15,980.
