Description

1878 Gold Dollar, PR65
Ex: Bass Collection

1878 G$1 JD-1, High R.6, PR65 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Although later gold dollar dates had high proof mintages, that was not the case for the 1878. A scant 20 proofs were coined. The present Gem would almost certainly be designated as Cameo or Deep Cameo if it was broken out of its circa-2000 holder and resubmitted, since the contrast is exceptional between the luminous devices and mirrored fields. Peach-gold margins encompass pink-red centers. The 18 in the date is lightly repunched. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (3/25).
Ex: U.S. Gold Coins Part I (Superior, 2/1973), lot 72; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part III (Bowers and Merena, 5/2000), lot 63.
