Description

1868 Seated Dollar, PR65+
CAC-Approved and Electrically Toned

1868 $1 PR65+ PCGS. CAC. OC-P2, High R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a, as always. Concentric circles of rose-gold, aquamarine, lime-green, sunrise yellow, and pink blanket the obverse. The reverse shows a soft blue-green across most of its surface, save for the thin rings of sunrise-yellow and pale-orange along the left half of the edge. A band of weakness exists from the eagle's left armpit to the center of the shield and across the head. However, the obverse is uniformly sharp, with all star centers visible.

The proof mintage of 1868 amounted to 600 coins, a slight decrease from the previous year. About three-quarters of the mintage has survived, one-third of which belong to the OC-P1 die marriage, and the other two-thirds of which are OC-P2 examples. The present offering is from the later die marriage, differentiated by its triple punched 1 and recut lower loop of second 8.

This coin finds itself the third finest non-Cameo certified by PCGS, and one of only nineteen to receive the coveted CAC sticker. This quality, bolstered by its electric toning, catapults this coin into the upper echelon of this date.(Registry values: N4719)
