Description

1901 Double Eagle, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified
Sole-Finest at NGC

1901 $20 MS66 NGC. Considering its relatively low mintage of 111,430 pieces, the 1901 Liberty double eagle is surprisingly available at the MS65 grade level, but finer coins are virtually unobtainable. Only a handful of such coins have been certified, all at the MS66 level. PCGS reports four 1901 double eagles at the MS66 grade and none finer, while NGC has seen only a single example -- apparently, this very coin (6/25). Heritage has sold only a single other MS66 1901 double eagle in our 25+ year archive and that was in 2007. A hoard of high-grade 1901 double eagles released in the 1990s is the source of most Gem Uncirculated 1901 double eagles. This exceptional, fully struck Premium Gem displays bold orange-gold coloration, great luster, and a paucity of post-strike distractions when compared to other high-grade 1901 double eagles. We expect many strong bids when this finest-certified 1901 Liberty twenty is called. NGC Census: 1 in 66, 0 finer (5/25).(Registry values: N4719)
