Description
1911 Half Eagle, MS65
Scarce This Fine
1911 $5 MS65 NGC. Its large mintage of 915,000 pieces makes
the 1911 half eagle an available date in lower Mint State grades
and a popular choice for type collectors. The issue becomes scarce
in MS64, and Gems are quite elusive. In A Handbook of 20th
Century United States Gold Coins, David Akers opines "Gems are
rare in an absolute sense" and "MS-66s are virtually unknown."The present coin is a delightful Gem, with lustrous, greenish-gold surfaces. The strike is a little soft on the lower feathers of the headdress, a feature commonly seen on this issue. While the 1911 is usually seen heavily abraded, the surfaces of this example show only a few insignificant handling marks. Census: 51 in 65, 2 finer (9/19).(Registry values: N7079)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28DP, PCGS# 8520, Greysheet# 9311)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
