Description

1818/5 B-1 Quarter, MS64
Clear Underdigit, Exceptional Quality

1818/5 25C B-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 2/6. This is a singular overdate, diagnostic for the variety with its own listing in the Guide Book. B-3 shares the same obverse, but is in a later state and shows little evidence of the underlying 5. Though the present piece is a trifle softly struck across the central devices, its wonderfully frosty luster is redeeming. Violet and rose-gold peripheral shadings yield to subtle silver-gray in the centers. Population (both 1818/5 varieties): 22 in 64, 15 finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 12 finer (3/18).
Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 1000.
