Description

1854-D Three Dollar, XF45
Collectible Example of This Key Date

1854-D $3 XF45 PCGS. Winter 1-A. One die pair exists for the 1854-D three dollar, which struck only 1,120 coins for circulation. Likely fewer than 150 pieces survive in all grades, and the date is an important one-year type coin in the Dahlonega gold series, being the only coin of that denomination produced at the Georgia branch mint. Depositors of gold bullion at the Southern facility preferred quarter eagles and half eagles, which were the majority of the gold coins in use in the South along the East Coast.

This lightly circulated piece displays medium orange-gold patina with hints of luster in the fields, and scattered light hairlines that accompany the grade. The coin is in the usual late die state, with weakness around the border dentils. Population: 20 in 45, 71 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N4719)
